Drew put the finishing touches on the last wall of the lodge’s main room and placed the paintbrush across the top of the paint can. He looked around the room. Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.

“Need any help?” Autumn asked.

“Hey. I didn’t hear you come in.”

“I didn’t want to interrupt you.” She crossed the room. “Looks nice.”

“It does.” He had to agree. “I’m done painting, but I could use some help with the cabin assignments. I’ve got a spreadsheet set up on my laptop.”

She shrugged. “I was looking for something a little more physical. Lawn mowing, furniture moving. Anything. Four days of school all day and studying all evening is my limit. I don’t know why Jinx had to ground me for the weekend, too.”

“Not my territory,” Drew said. No way he was going to give any opinion on Emily’s discipline. He folded the stepladder he’d been using. “You can take this out to the shed and then I have new name signs to put on the cabins.”

“Anything to escape the house.”

“Uh, Emily knows you came down here?”

“Yeah, she released me to your recognizance.”

He laughed. “It can’t be that bad. You still have the phone, TV and computer.”

“I’ve already had that lecture. I suppose your mother was like Gram and didn’t let you watch TV or use your computer.”

“We didn’t have a computer. But worse than that, she didn’t let me go to soccer practice.”

“Harsh.” She headed out the door with the ladder. “I’ll be right back so you can tell me what to do with the signs.”

This was the first chance he’d had to talk with Autumn alone, since Emily had asked him to find out what was going on with her and her grandmother. He’d thought about how to do it and had decided the direct approach was best. Either he’d find out or he’d have both of them ticked at him. Not a pleasant prospect. He went into the lodge kitchen and rinsed out the paintbrush, leaving it there to soak in soapy water.

“Cute,” Autumn said when he returned to the main room. She dangled the new hiking trail tags that he’d strung on twine according to color. “Who knew you were so uptight.” She nodded at the table. “All this and a computer-printed map color-coordinated to the tags.”

“The word is organized, brat,” he teased. “If you do a good job with the cabin signs, I’ll let you help me retag the hiking trails tomorrow.”

“Yes, please, anything to get out of the house. Then, I’ll only have to get through Sunday. And Emily will have to let me go to Sunday school and church.”

“She doesn’t have to, but I think she will.”

He ignored the dirty look Autumn gave him.

“The signs, hooks and hammer are on the porch. I’ll walk you over and show you what I want you to do.” Drew picked up the carved wooden signs, and she carried the hammer and plastic container of hooks.
